Workbooks are fairly useless if you don?t have access to routers and switches. If you have already started preparing for your CCIE exam, you’ll be all too aware that powering-up 9 routers and 4 switches is noisy when your at home and can be fairly distracting as well as expensive. An viable alternative is CCIE rack rentals. To hire or rent the equipment from providers such as IP Experts or INE can be cost effective if managed carefully.

Things to consider before decided on whether to rent or purchase
Its is estimated that you will need between 1000 – 1200 hours of rack time dedicated to studying the workbooks before your ready to attempt the lab exam. This is obviously subjective and will depend on your existing knowledge and experience. On average, most students can sit for about 6 hours studying before they start to loose concentration . This changes from day to day but my own experience was that studying more than six hours a day impacted my concentration and even affected the next day’s studying.

Each rack rental slot is normally 6 hours. Divide 1000 hours into 6 hour slots and you get 166 slots. The average 6 hour slot costs round $20. So to complete 1000 hours of rack time, it will cost you around $3330. This is a lot of money but the flexibility of using rack rentals is that you don’t need to worry about device failures or storage space at home or in the office. Remember that most provider offer good discount if you purchased several slots in one transaction. However, if you buy the hardware, you can always sell it afterwards. Your choice but my own experience, I found it easier to use rack rentals as i was ready to go in minutes.
