OSPF Routing In A MPLS Network

Good Morning.

I have been doing some labs with routing OSPF over an MPLS VPN network and I am seeing that if I am sharing prefixes with another site and the domain IDs are the same, a type 3 LSA will be generated.  I don’t understand why a type 3 LSA is generated instead of the a type 1 LSA.  My sites are in the same OSPF area and share the same process/domain ID.  I understand that a sham-link will fix that and therefore cause a type 1 LSA to be generated, but can someone explain why this happens in the first place?

Thanks,

Erick
