master/slave election criteria

Shonay,

The master/slave negotiation between two adjacent-potential routers is, as you know, performed during the exstart start. I just read about this in my material for the CCIE. “The master controls the synchronization process and ensures that only one DD packet is outstanding at a time.” -CCIE TCP/IP Routing p359.

We need to understand that nothing is assumed in networking. There’s always a reason for why we do certain things and it usually boils down to logic. Of course you know that if intermediary systems don’t communicate correct reachability information or forwarding information, problems occur with switching and information gets lost and dropped. When two routers need to exchange information, sometimes it can be a peer-to-peer, other times it can be a client/server (slave/master). The reasoning, I’m sure has to deal with ambiguity when sending information during early negotiation. Like I said, nothing can be assumed because it could be ambiguous.

Simply put, after 2WAY negotiation has been achieved, the real start of the reachability-information-exchange begins. OSPF’s logic states that there needs to be a master/slave relationship per adjacency.

The criteria for the election, per adjacency, is the router-id of both nodes. The node with the highest router-id is the master. This is why OSPF needs a router-id generated prior to the OSPF application being turned on.

Hope that helps,

Mike

Umm, by that same logic, you don’t want states to legalize Gay Marriage.

Why is t that 25 states allow people to marry 1st cousins, but only 6 states allow gay marriage? Where’s the logic?

Definitely see your logic. You may be correct and I might not be. WI & PA not states that r easy 2 call. –>
