It is fairly well documented that Cisco has introduced a new “Real World” approach to the CCIE. The CCIE Lab exam now tries to test students on two levels.
Troubleshooting
You are given 35+ routers and switches with around ten configuration scenarios/issues within the topology. Most of these issues/faults must be fixed within two hours or it’s an instant fail. Don’t under-estimate this section!!!
There are several providers out there that offer workbooks dedicated to practicing troubleshooting. I personally used INE, volume 4 which tested your knowledge and know-how.
Configuration
Implement a series of configurations as per requirements set by the proctor
When preparing and studying for your CCIE lab exam, don’t make the mistake of not preparing for the Troubleshooting test in the same way as preparing for the Configuration section. If you do not resolve the network issues within the scheduled time-frame, it?s an instant fail regardless of how you perform in the Configuration section of the test. Troubleshooting training is required in addition to configuration training. If you don’t want to take my word for it, you can checkout a sample and judge for yourself. It is surprisingly difficult and just as challenging as the configuration section of the exam. Whatever your approach to the CCIE Lab exam, one thing is certain; you will not pass the CCIE lab exam without many hours of practice on equipment and a deep understanding of the technologies. It?s roughly estimated that it takes at least 1000 hours of rack time before you can consider yourself ready to attempt the lab exam. Using a good quality CCIE workbook is essential in order to take you through the technologies in detail ensuring that you can respond to any task presented in the exam.
Luckily, that is why CCIE workbooks were invented!
Workbooks are designed to take the student through each technology with enough detail to meet and most proberly exceed the requirements of the Cisco CCIE lab exam. With so many technologies to study, each CCIE candidate is expected to know this level of detail so don’t be alarmed, we all must comply with the exam requirements.
Note: A CCIE workbookis targeted towards CCIE Routing & Switching candidates who have already obtained their CCNP or have equivalent level of knowledge, and have passed the CCIE Routing & Switching Written Lab Exam.

CCIE Workbook – An essential tool in your preparations for the Cisco CCIE lab exam. We have complied a list of CCIE workbook providers from around the globe to assist students with their studies.
Hi, I was really unsure which Workbook to choose when I started. I initially looked at all the providers but this confused me more and I became even more hesitant in choosing a workbook. In the end, I narrowed it down to IP Experts and Internetworking Experts – both market leaders – and then spoke to both companies before finally deciding on Internetworking Experts. I am sure IP Expert Workbooks are great but Internetworking Expert Workbooks just worked for me. I mean, I was taught everything I needed to know and more.
Obviously, the content structure of both providers is clear and concise but, speaking from experience; Internetworking Expert Workbooks have been brilliant and I would recommend them to anyone.
Netmetric workbooks are ok. They don’t have the detailed breakdowns like INE or IP Experts and only concentrate on the key technology features. You will not find any unnecessary and over-complicated tasks or introduction of strange features/router tricks.
