Reading CCIE LAN Switching…
On the topic of basic Ethernet. The book explains that 10Mbps Ethernet has timers (Inter-Frame Gap: 9.6microseconds, Preamble: 6.4microseconds and minimum FrameTime: 51.2microseconds). 100Mbps divides those timers by 10. I was under the impression that 100Mbps was achieved because of the nature of full duplex and that it cannot exist in any half-duplex environments? This books states that 100Mbps is achieved based on timing and can still exist with half-duplex. The result is the collision domain diameter is reduced. If 100Mbps w/half-duplex is possible, was it considered a relatively small portion of mixed-type Ethernet networks? Or did 100Mbps w/half-duplex see a lengthy share of time in between 10Mbps half-duplex and 100Mbps half-duplex?
Thanks,
Mike
